Why do Fungus gnats attack plants?

Fungus gnats thrive on soil that is left constantly moist for a very very long period. The chances of getting fungus gnats increases if and when non-decomposed fruit and vegetables waste water is used as a fertilizer, like banana peel fertilizers, onion peel fertilizers, potato peel fertilizers.





Steps to eliminate Fungus gnats from plants

1. Treat the soil naturally

  • The first step is to  let the top layer of the soil dry out naturally
  • Till the top layer of the soil
  • Take 1 cup of water and add 2 tbsp of hydrogen peroxide to it 
  • Mix well and spray this solution over the top layer of the soil
  • Once done, till the top layer of soil up to 2 inches
  • Spray the solution once again 
  • Let the soil dry out completely and don't water till then
  • Till the problem is solved water only via bottom watering method
  • Repeat the process till the problem is sorted
  • The problem should get solved in 2-3 weeks maximum




2. Cover the soil

  • Cover the top layer of the soil with dry soil or
  • Cover the soil with leca balls or 
  • Add a layer of sand
  • Follow any one of the option this will suffocate the larve which lives on the top layer of the soil




3. Natural pesticide


  • Use organic neem oil, mix 5 drops of neem oil in one litre water
  • Spray this over the top layer of the soil
  • Let the top layer of the soil dry naturally
  • Avoid watering plant from the top
  • Use bottom watering method instead



4. Sticky Trap


  • Use yellow sticky trap to trap the fully developed and small fungus gnats 
  • But this solution will not get rid of the larve that is on the top layer of the soil




5. How To Prevent Fungus Gnats From Getting Into Your Plants


  • Let the top layer of the soil dry out before you water the plant from the top
  • It is better to stick with bottom watering method
  • Tilling of soil occasionally will help in getting rid of the larve if any at the initial stage itself
  • Avoid using non-decomposed organic matter as fertilizers like home made instant fruits and vegetable peel fertilizers
